Fall & Winter Wild Bird Feeding

Fall is the time of year when you are likely to see the greatest variety of songbirds in your yard. It's migration season and many birds "drop in" for a meal at convenient backyard feeders as they make their way south.

Some may think putting out a feeder and seed is just an enjoyable hobby, a way to attract these beautiful visitors for close-up viewing. There is, however, a school of thought that says that with the destruction of natural habitats, backyard bird feeding is more important than ever in helping maintain America's songbird population. Researchers say that the recovery of America's cardinal population is likely the result of park-like urban habitats and the presence of bird feeders.

If you're interested in other ways to help our feathered friends, here are some additional ideas that will help the birds all year round.

First, think of adding a birdbath or other water source to your yard. Fresh water all year around is a critical element in any feeding program. Typically, songbirds need a sizable quantity of water for drinking and bathing. Their feathers must be clean and efficient in order for them to keep warm. Remember that most birds prefer a water source that is far enough away from vegetation to allow a clear view of approaching danger, but close enough to cover to seek refuge if it is needed. Provide fresh water every day.

Fall is a great time to plant new trees and shrubs. If you're adding to your landscaping remember that a natural habitat can be re-created around homes with the addition of fruit- or nut-bearing trees and shrubs. Plants and flowers that attract insects are also important. During the spring and summer birds will visit and settle in habitats that offer food and water as well as places to raise their young and escape from the elements or predators.

Another consideration is adding to the variety of food offered. Suet feeders will attract the birds, such as woodpeckers, that primarily eat insects. Seeds offered in bird feeders provide needed nutrients and high-energy fats. Nutritious fruits, berries and nuts help add variety to songbirds' diets.
