Lovebirds - High Energy In A Small Package

If you're looking for an intelligent, playful bird companion, a lovebird may be just the pet for you. These small parrots love to play, and they chatter and interact continuously. They are famous for their charming behavior.

Lovebirds are suitable pets for first-time bird owners and are easy to care for. If you're after a loving companion, get one bird and your pet will bond to you. If you have a busy life and are away from home most of the day, then a second lovebird should be the playmate. Be aware, however, that the two birds will bond and stay busy together. You'll have a reduced role in their lives!

Lovebirds are known for their high energy and inquisitive natures. To properly provide for your pet, you'll need a cage that is 24 or more inches wide. Anything less than 18 inches may be too restrictive. Your lovebird will appreciate at least two perches (on different levels) and lots of toys, bells, ladders and mirrors. Avoid toys designed for parakeets as they may not last very long. This "mini-parrot" has a very strong beak and loves to chew. Toys designed for cockatiels and small parrots are the right size for lovebirds. The lovebird also loves to preen and enjoys bathing -- splashing in a shallow bird bath or saucer.

Never house your lovebird with another kind of bird. They will love one of their own kind, and they will love you, but they can be very aggressive to other birds. The five- to eight-inch long lovebird is capable of injuring or even killing birds smaller than himself. They'll even bully bigger birds!

Feeding lovebirds, as well as other indoor birds, is very easy. There are pelleted foods formulated to meet your pet's complete nutrition needs. If you choose to feed a seed diet, be sure to select a complete diet that contains nutrient supplements. You can also offer your bird fresh fruits and vegetables. Fresh water is a must, grit for digestion and a cuttlebone for chewing and beak sharpening round out the requirements.

If you're considering a pet bird, the trained professionals at Feeders Supply can help you select the kind of bird that's right for you and provide you with the advice you need to get off to a good start with your feathered friend. When you purchase a new bird cage at Feeders Supply, you'll save 10% on additional items purchased that day for your pet's new home, While the discount does not apply to live animals, you'll find a great selection of birds at most area Feeders Supply stores.
