Nyjer or Thistle?

Nyjer seed is a favorite food of Goldfinches, House Finches and Pine Siskins. It resembles small grains of wild rice and has a high fat and protein content. Nyjer is also known as thistle. Many people think they will be growing thistle weeds in their yard if they offer this seed. In fact, nyjer is not a thistle at all. It's the seed of the nyjer plant, which is native to Ethiopia and may have been named after the river Niger that flows through northern parts of Africa. Nyjer seed, sold as birdseed, is heated to prevent it from germinating. Tube type feeders with small openings are used as nyjer or "thistle seed" feeders.

Feeders Supply sells thistle seed by the pound or in 50 lb. bags. We deal directly with reputable importers in order to provide you with the freshest seed possible. Because of our bird feed sales volume and our expertise in buying and handling, you can trust that the thistle seed you buy at Feeders Supply has not been stored for long periods of time or mishandled. We are committed to bringing you the highest quality feed at the most competitive price possible. That's why our thistle seed has been priced at eighty-nine cents a pound for more than ten years. During our Fall Sale, you'll find it on sale for seventy-nine cents a pound! Be sure to stock up today.
