Parakeets Are Loving Pets

Parakeets are more than just pretty birds that you look at in a cage. These small Australian members of the parrot family are intelligent, affectionate, gregarious and full of joy. In the wild they live in flocks and have one lifelong mate. They are loving pets, but when left alone will succumb to apathy and boredom. Purchasing parakeets in pairs-- they may be of the same sex -- is one way of assuring your pets' well being. This is especially important if you are not at home all day and cannot devote a lot of time to your pet. In pairs, parakeets tend to bond more to each other than to the owner.

And, with the birds, comes the need for a cage. The cage should be large enough that your birds can spread and flap their wings. The best room for the cage is the living room or family room where your feathery friends can see and interact with the whole family. Kitchens can be dangerous places for parakeets because of drafts and odors. These birds are susceptible to respiratory infections and should be protected from chill breezes. Place the cage up, about eye level, and preferably in a corner. The cage should also be close to a window, but not directly exposed to drafts or sunlight.

Your parakeet set-up shopping list includes:

  • Automatic water dispenser. A bottle designed to hang in the cage and that assures clean water all the time.

  • Mixed birdseed. Formulated especially for parakeets.

  • Millet spray. A special treat that can be used to hand train your pet.

  • A stone. For sharpening the bill - cuttlebone or mineral stone.

  • One or two extra food dishes. For offering fresh vegetables and fruits.

  • Toys. Mirrors, hanging bells, plastic balls with bells inside (whiffle balls).

  • Charcoal. To add to birdseed to prevent diarrhea some times caused by the move to a new home.

Hand-taming your feathered beauties is a painstaking, rewarding process. The birds are naturally cautious and easily startled. The one big rule is to never grab your pet. Offering millet by hand at the same time daily and with patience is one tip for building a trusting relationship. Speaking and singing to the birds every time you're with them is also important.

Feeders Supply has the supplies and equipment your parakeets need. Several excellent care and training books are available in each store's library department. Parakeets are available for purchase at the Preston Hwy., Fern Creek and New Albany Feeders Supply stores.
