The latest trend in “pocket pets” is the oft-maligned rat. Many who now own these lovable rodents made their decision because of the good press rats have received when several celebrities announced that they adore their little pals. Those who sing the praises of pet rats include Clint Eastwood, Angelina Jolie, Jamie Lee Curtis and Kim Basinger. Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies, even decided to adopt the two rats used to play his character's pet rat Scabbers. Add to all that momentum the Disney/Pixar hit movie, “Ratatatouille” and the adorable Remy the Rat character, and you have a real movement for these cuddly critters.
The words "sweet" and "cute" may seem out of place to some, but domestic rats don't act like street rats or look like them either. They actually are very smart and appealing as pets. They’re attractive because breeders have come up with many rat variations: different colors and coat types as well as different sizes.
Domesticated rats are clean, friendly, playful, quiet, inexpensive, low-maintenance and entertaining pets that are often described as miniature dogs. Rats are friendlier than hamsters, gerbils and mice, and these sociable creatures love company. Rats can also be taught tricks, such as to come when called and to hop through a hoop.
When shopping for a pet rat, look for a rat that looks inquisitive, healthy, alert and active. As rats are sociable creatures, it’s a good idea to purchase two of the same gender. It’s up to you whether you get a male or a female – males, or bucks, are a little more odorous than females but make relaxed and easygoing pets that are quite content to sleep on their owners’ laps. Females, known as does, are more active and inquisitive and make more playful pets.
When choosing a home for your pet, choose a large and spacious one that can accommodate two rats, some toys and lots of room to explore and play. Wire cages are preferable to plastic or glass tanks.
You also need to buy wood shavings to line the cage with. Don’t use pine or cedar shavings. Although these are inexpensive, they contain phenols that can injure a rat’s internal organs or cause respiratory problems. Use aspen bedding.
At Feeders Supply you’ll find an extensive line of toys, hutches, supplements, vitamins, formulated diets, treats and more. The new Ratatouille rat treats come in two varieties, Le Bon Croissant and Quiche Lorraine.
As with any pet, never purchase a pocket pet on a whim or if you're uncertain you'll be able to devote the time and financial effort needed for proper care and attention. Responsible pet ownership is the watchword. Your pet will live two to three years and you need to be able to commit to its care for its lifetime. When you do, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how attached you'll become to these clever, playful little pets.
