Cockatiels make wonderful pets
for those who've never had a bird as a pet. When hand fed and tamed,
they are gentle, loving and very personable pets. They love attention
and reward it with affection.
Cockatiels
are small (about 14 inches long), usually grey birds with a movable
crest, a long tail and white "racing stripes" on their
wings. They are native to Australia. Both males and females are
affectionate and like to be cuddled. The males tend to be more vocal,
whistling and singing more than do females. Cockatiels are natural
acrobats and clowns and love attention.
Cockatiels
have minimum maintenance requirements. They prefer big cages, large
enough for them to stretch their wings. These birds are ground feeders
and appreciate a bigger cage bottom for feeding. They need a variety
of perch sizes. Perches with varying diameters and shapes help exercise
their feet. Feed them a diet of specially-formulated pet bird pellets,
fresh fruits and vegetables and treats such as whole-grain bread.
Calcium is a must for birds, so provide them with cuttlebones and
mineral blocks at all times. When properly cared for, your pet can
live to be 15 to 25 years old.
The
joy of Cockatiels as pets is their natural inquisitiveness and their
affectionate natures. If you want your bird to be a member of the
family, include him in your daily life. Provide a playpen or perch
where he can enjoy his toys and be part of family activities. These
birds love to bathe, so access to water is important. Some owners
even invite their pets into the shower with them! Others find their
birds gladly spend an evening perched on a shoulder and gazing at
the television. The easiest way to have a happy pet is to spend
as much time with him as you can. The more time you spend, the more
loving and tame your bird will be.
