You know you're ready for the commitment, the responsibility of owning a pet. You may even know if you're ready to share your life with a canine companion or an intriguing feline. But, have you yet considered whether a puppy, kitten or adult pet is right for your lifestyle?
There's nothing quite as cute as a bouncy puppy or a playful kitten. However, youngsters require a lot of additional care. For the puppy, there's cage training, house training, obedience training, etc. Kittens on the other hand, require tons of patience. They are some of the most playful characters around. Are you ready to deal with running, climbing, clawing and all the stages of "growing up"?
If you're ready for lots of love and devotion, but your busy life may not accommodate actually raising a pet, consider adopting an adult animal. Feeders Supply offers that opportunity through our regular adoption programs (see schedule in this issue). And, in fact, we are so committed to pet adoption that some of our stores now feature Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) adoption centers! You can also contact local purebred rescue groups. See our Adoption page for more information.
The adult pets offered by KHS have been screened for adoption suitability. These are often family pets who found their way to the shelter as a result of owners' life changes and not because of any problem with the animal. But, the animal is nonetheless homeless through no fault of its own. These adult dogs and cats offer love and devotion. And, because they have already been through the training and growing up stages of their lives, they are often virtually trouble-free when it comes to adapting to your home and lifestyle.
If you're considering a cat…consider two. Myth has it that cats are not social creatures. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most cat owners will tell you that cats are better pets in pairs. Pairs or groups of cats form affectionate bonds and will delight you with their affection for you and for one another. Plus, providing same-species company insures a ready playmate and companion. Cats in pairs or groups appear much more well adjusted and seem to make better pets overall.
All animals adopted through KHS are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, wormed and screened for possible health problems. So, if you're thinking of adding a pet … seriously consider the benefits of adopting an adult cat or dog.
