Tropical Fish - Cichlids

by Pat Prestigiacomo
Fish Department Manager & Assistant Manager,

Middletown Feeders Supply

African Cichlids are largely found in three major lakes in Africa: Lake Malawi, Tanganyika and Lake Victoria. This group of fish is actually composed of several different species. Cichlids are very sought after by fish enthusiasts because of the brilliant colors displayed by the males. Most fresh water fish do not have the Cichlids vibrant colors. And, in fact, the only real alternative for colorful tank fish are the marine species.

Care and upkeep of African Cichlids in the Louisville area is quite easy. The fish that are found in the wild live in high-alkaline water. High-alkaline water can be found in this area if you're on city water service!

African Cichlids are very territorial, so thought should go into the size of your tank and the number of fish you're considering. The larger the tank, the bigger the number of fish it can contain. Your Feeders Supply fish department professionals can advise you what size and how many fish can be accommodated by your tank.

Tank ornaments for Cichlids should include lots of rocks. These fish require multiple places to hide and to establish their territory. Always use tank ornaments, rocks and gravel that have been treated and are safe for use in your aquarium. Rocks or other debris from your yard, for instance, can introduce harmful bacteria into the tank environment.

Feeding this fish group is very easy because of the large selection of Cichlid flakes and pellets that are now on the market.

If you're interested in a tank with African Cichlids, stop by any Feeders Supply fish department. We have a great selection and all the products and advice you'll need to get started with these beautiful freshwater fish.
