Transporting Your Pet Safely
January 2nd is National Pet Travel Safety Day! In this blog, we're going to cover pet safety while driving. Many pets - especially dogs and cats - need to get in the car periodically to see the vet or to see the groomer. Driving with pets can be done safely, but it's important to have the right equipment and to ensure that your pet feels comfortable throughout the drive. These tips can help you keep your pet safe in the car on these necessary trips.
Adjust Your Pet to the Car
Some pets love moving vehicles, others do not. Before you know how your pet feels about rides in the car, take your pet for short drives to see how they react. If your pet seems to feel anxiety or fear in the car, wait until your pet has adjusted to these shorter rides before taking your pet for a longer ride.
Never Leave Your Pet Unattended
Every year, pets die because they are left in hot vehicles. Never go anywhere with the plan to leave your pet in the vehicle while you run into a store. If you can't bring your pet into your destination, leave your pet at home.
Buy A Safety Harness or Crate That Can Be Buckled
Pets need to be restrained in moving vehicles - just like people. Buy a pet crate for your vehicle, or a pet harness that will hook up to your seat belt system.
Keep Your Pet Fully Inside the Car While It's Moving
Never allow your pet to stick their head out of the window while the car is moving. If you own a truck, do not allow your dog or cat to ride in the bed of the truck while it is in motion. If your pet rides in the back of the vehicle, they could be injured in the event of an accident, or they could even cause an accident themselves.
No Lap Sitting!
Do not hold your pet in your lap while driving. If you should be in an accident, you could crush your pet against the dashboard, or your pet could fly out of your arms and out of the vehicle. If your pet likes to jump into your lap in the car, use a pet barrier to keep your pet safely in the backseat, where they belong.
Bring Your Pet's Supplies With You
Does your pet need special food, medicine or supplies once you reach your destination? Buy your pet a carrier so you can bring everything that your pet needs. This way, you'll never have to worry that your pet will be stranded in your destination without the proper supplies to stay healthy and happy.
